The desert's wedding season is the inverse of the country's. Here is the temperature data and the mechanism behind the wind through the pass. Then the two months of the year you cannot have.
Palm Springs averages 114.8 days a year at or above 100 degrees, and from June through September the normal daily high exceeds 100 in every one of those months. The all-time record, 124 degrees, was set on 5 July 2024. Cal/OSHA's outdoor heat standard, Title 8 section 3395, is the useful benchmark here, because a desert wedding is somebody's outdoor workplace. Shade must be present once the temperature passes 80 degrees, and high-heat procedures begin at 95. Where drinking water is not plumbed, the employer has to supply a quart per person per hour. The state requires that for the catering crew, and it is a reasonable floor for grandparents and children as well. The National Park Service makes the same argument operationally: it closes Indian Cove Amphitheater, the one site in Joshua Tree National Park that can hold a hundred-guest ceremony, for the entire period 1 June through 31 August. Cal/OSHA also treats acclimatization as a distinct risk factor, which is worth carrying across to a guest list flying in from Seattle in June.
The San Gorgonio Pass is the gap between San Jacinto Peak and San Gorgonio Mountain, and air drawn from the cooler coastal basin toward the hot desert accelerates as it squeezes through, which is why the corridor is full of turbines. April is the windiest month at an average hourly speed of 7.7 mph, and that number is close to useless for planning, because it is a twenty-four-hour mean that includes calm nights. Palm Springs Life puts ordinary event-relevant wind in the pass at 25 to 40 mph. Build the setup for 40 and the 7.7 stops mattering: ballast under every vertical structure, weight on every loose paper, and a windscreened lavalier tucked under fabric so the vows survive the video. Wind builds through the afternoon and eases after sundown. Exposure falls with distance from the pass, so north Palm Springs is worst and the down-valley cities and the Morongo Basin are calmer. On 20 August 2023 Tropical Storm Hilary dropped 3.18 inches on Palm Springs in a single day, against an annual normal of 4.93 inches, closing Interstate 10 in both directions and taking 911 dispatch down across the valley.
Modernism Week runs 11 to 21 February 2027 and drew 111,000 people in 2026, taking the small mid-century hotels a couple would want first. The Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival occupies Indio for much of the same stretch; in 2026 it ran 12 February to 1 March, and 2027 dates were not announced when this was written. The BNP Paribas Open runs 28 February to 14 March 2027 and fills the mid-valley for a fortnight. Coachella follows in 2027 on 9 to 11 April and 16 to 18 April, and Stagecoach on 23 to 25 April 2027, three consecutive weekends at the same polo grounds, with room rates, minimum stays, airfares and vendor availability all moving together. Treat 9 to 25 April 2027 as one block. The gap between those two walls is the most valuable date in this guide. From 15 March, once the tournament has finished, to 8 April, before the festival build starts, the valley is warm, quiet and available. Late October into early December and January into early February are the other clean runs.
